The objective of this program is to enable meritorious and financially deserving students across India to pursue their dream of professional education in Engineering and Medicine.

Sushila D’Souza Endowment Goals:

The Sushila D’Souza Endowment Fund is used to provide monetary assistance to academically talented students from financially underprivileged backgrounds pursuing engineering and medical degrees. FFE aims to accomplish this task through merit cum means scholarship program.  5 new students (4 Engineering and 1 medical student) are added for support under this program every year.

Grant Accomplishments:

Since 2013, scholarships have been disbursed to 20 eligible Engineering & Medical Students (16 Engineering and 4 Medical Students).   Students supported under this program have shown very good academic progress.

Socio - Economic Background of beneficiaries:

Students supported under this program are exceptionally meritorious scholars but belong to humble backgrounds where the average annual income of the entire family is around Rs.68,000/-(approximately USD 1,000). These students typically come from families where the father is the sole bread winner in the family (farmers, laborers, weaving/tailoring/ welding/salesman etc.). For students from such economically deprived families, professional education often remains a distant dream.

Situation of Program Participants before Commencement of the Project:

Higher education in India especially in the field of medicine and engineering, is often unaffordable to students from low income families. The scholars under this project come from financially deprived families and it is difficult for such families to approach banks for educational loans which are usually disbursed at a very high rate of interest. FFE’s current model which lays emphasis on reimbursement of tuition cost incurred, cushions the beneficiaries form the cost of college expenses, thus enabling these deserving students to pursue their Engineering and Medical courses.

Eligibility and Selection of Students:

The students supported under this project were selected from various parts of India in accordance with FFE’s selection criteria for academic excellence, family income and background. In the selection of scholars, the trust will neither accord any preference nor discriminate on the basis of the student’s caste, community, religion or gender.

Project Beneficiaries:

Since the commencement of this project in 2013-14, every year FFE has been awarding scholarships to 4 Engineering and 1 Medical student. A new cohort of 5 students (4 Engineering and 1Medical student) is being added for support each year. During FY 2016-17, 20 students (16 BE/BTech and 4 Medical students) were supported. All students will be supported for their entire 4/5 year course of study.
4 engineering students from the FY 2013 -14 batch have completed their Engineering course and graduated. All 4 students have gained employment in the companies listed:  Lawkim Motors Group (Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Ltd.), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, ShoreTel and Mu Sigma Business Solutions Pvt. Ltd. Their Engineering education has been possible only because of the generous financial support received from Family and Friends of Sushila D’Souza who have contributed to the Sushila D’Souza Memorial Scholarship.

Academic Progress of Students Supported Under This Project:

Students supported under this project, both Engineering and Medical students have performed well in their scholastic pursuits in the last academic year. Engineering students of 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16  and 2016-17 batches have scored an average Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) of 7.7, 7.96, 8.17 and 7.89 on 10 respectively. Medical students have fared well scoring above 69.62%.

Scholarship Renewal:

Students must qualify each year in order for the scholarship to be renewed. Scholarships are renewed annually based on the students’ academic performance and demonstrated financial need. The progress of the student is monitored by FFE; all FFE scholars are expected to maintain good academic credentials through their degree program. Students are required to complete and submit the renewal application form along with supporting documents (Academic records/transcripts, pass certificates and documentation/receipts for all expenses incurred) each year for scholarship renewal to FFE. Students progress’ is tracked through the course of the program.
